Australian Open 2021: Serena Williams overpowers Simona Halep to advance into semifinals- 10th seeded Serena Williams on Tuesday thrashed World No.2 Simona Halep to book her place in the Australian Open 2021 semifinals. The 23 times Grand Slam Champion beat the Romanian 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets that lasted an hour and 21 minutes. The 39-year-old will next face Naomi Osaka who had defeated her in US Open final 2018. Serena was in an emphatic mood in the first set and she did not give Halep any chance and as a result, the American star won the first set 6-3. Serena hit 14 winners to win the opening set. In the second set, Halep gained a 3-1 lead, but Serena managed to come back to bring the scoreline level at 3-3. Australian Open 2021: Aslan Karatsev stuns Grigor Dimitrov to enter semifinals “I just realised I was making a lot of unforced errors and I was like ‘stay in there, keep going’ and that’s what I did,” said Serena after her victory, adding, “This is definitely the best match I’ve played in this tournament so far and I had to do that going up against the number two in the world, so that’s what I did and I’m excited. “Last year my coach Patrick had a little talk with me on how I had to do better on my defence.” She has not added to her Grand Slam tally since beating her sister Venus in the Australian Open final in 2017. Earlier in the day, Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing Australian Open after overpowering Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh on Tuesday. The three-time Grand Slam champion Osaka defeated Hsieh in two consecutive sets and sealed a comfortable victory in 66 minutes at Rod Laver Arena. The Austrian star fell victim to the Bulgarian star today, losing 6-4 6-4 6-0, in a match that lasted for two hours.  The match began with Dominic serving and he took a 1-0 lead. In the fourth game of the opening set, Thiem struck first blood and took the early break. However, Dimitrov had other plans and struck right back, taking the next four games in a row and put himself in the driver’s seat. He eventually sealed the first set 6-4 in his favor.  Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 14, 2021 Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in action during his fourth round match against Austria’s Dominic Thiem REUTERS/Asanka Brendon RatnayakeDuring the set, it was Thiem’s unforced errors that hampered his chances. “Hadn’t Reached My Peak”: Serena Williams Reflects on Her Tough Win Over Aryna Sabalenka at Australian Open 2021
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Serena Williams had a tough victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of Australian Open 2021. She reached a record-equalling 54th Grand Slam quarterfinal and is en route to a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam. In her post-match interview, Serena revealed how she handled big points and kept herself motivated to win. “I felt like even games that I lost, I was so close to winning. Not all games, but probably most of those games. I just needed to play better on the big points. “I knew that I could. I still hadn’t reached my peak. I was like, Okay, Serena, you got this, just keep going.” Serena Williams of the U.S. in action during her fourth-round match against Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka. REUTERS/Loren ElliottSpeaking of her injury, Serena revealed that she was playing carefree for most of the match. Serena has been dealing with an Achilles injury for a while, and it was troubling her later in the 2020 season. “I do get a lot of balls back when I need to. Yeah, I didn’t think about my Achilles. It’s so good to not think about it…it’s been a problem actually since 2018, so…I just never want that problem again. It feels really good to just play and to run, to not feel that” Serena Williams vs Aryna Sabalenka: First Set goes Serena’s way Sabalenka started the match better than Serena. The Belarusian didn’t allow Serena any loose balls and quickly put the American under pressure. But Serena navigated her way through the tough games and put up her fight. At 3-3, there was the first breakpoint for Sabalenka, but she couldn’t convert it and Serena took the lead at 4-3. The first set was evenly poised, and both the players had great rallies. When Sabalenka was trailing at 5-4, she had a great rally against Serena where the American showed great defense. Serena saw her first breakpoint and set point at 5-4. But Serena needed a second opportunity to take the first set, 6-4. Woeful set for Serena Simply said, the second set was woeful for Serena Williams. She was broken in the first game itself. And with Sabalenka earning a second break, Serena found herself 3-0 down in the second set in just 17 minutes. Serena got a break back in the subsequent game to open her second set 1-3. But Serena’s first serve percentage dropped, and she failed to hold a third consecutive game and trailed 4-1. From there, Sabalenka quickly finished off the set, 6-2. Serena Williams seals her place in record-equaling Australian Open quarterfinal Serena massively improved in the third set. She fended off Sabalenka’s advances to take a 4-1 lead. But Sabalenka didn’t let it go and a blip from Serena saw Sabalenka level the match 4-4. Sabalenka was level with Serena in terms of winners and unforced errors. But trailing at 5-4, Sabalenka had a few unforced errors and Serena won the third set and match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. “Probably Going to Smash Me”: Hsieh Su-wei Wary of Naomi Osaka Challenge at Australian Open 2021
By admin | | 0 Comments |

High on belief and punching way above her weight in the women’s game, Hsieh Su-wei has opened up on her quarter-final meeting with World Number 3 Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open on Monday. The 71st-ranked player caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by dumping 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu out of Melbourne Park and will have little to lose going into the last-eight tie. Osaka a “very good player”, says Hsieh Su-wei Speaking to reporters ahead of the showdown on Monday, Su-wei lavished praise on her Japanese opponent, calling her a “very good player”. Though struggling with her English, she left little doubt on how she rates her more illustrious and accomplished rival ahead of the last-eight battle. Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 10, 2021 Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh in action during her second round match against Canada’s Bianca Andreescu REUTERS/Jaimi Joy“Anyone play her, they will get troubles,” was her short but loaded statement on her opponent’s game ahead of the quarter-final clash. However, she was quick to add that while Osaka will try to overwhelm her with her signature power tennis, she will focus on her strengths instead of worrying about her opponent. “She probably going to smash me on the court. I try to play my game, do my job, see what happens,” the Taiwanese said in her broken English. Hsieh Su-wei says she will back her strengths against Naomi Osaka in the QF While she out-muscled her opponents in previous rounds, the Japanese had to dig deep in her come-from-behind win over two-time Grand Slam champion and last year’s Australian Open finalist Garbine Muguruza on Sunday. Muguruza was up 5-3 and on match point in the deciding set when Osaka scripted a remarkable comeback story. Su-wei, on the other hand, had a comparatively easier ride into the last-eight on Valentine’s Day as she made short work of Marketa Vondrouska on the way to recording a 6-4, 6-2 win. As their head-to-head record bears evidence, the Japanese has not had it easy against Su-wei on hard courts. Osaka holds a 2-1 lead over the Taiwanese in three head-to-head meetings at hard-court events, with all matches going to three sets. Though unfancied, expect the Su-wei to give Osaka a run for her money as the two battle it out for a place in the last-four on Monday. WATCH: Nick Kyrgios Takes a Dig at Novak Djokovic by Mocking His ‘Cringeworthy’ Celebration
By admin | | 0 Comments |

The 2015 Australian Open quarterfinalist Nick Kyrgios got knocked out of the season’s first Grand Slam event, losing to Austrian star Dominic Thiem in the third round. Nonetheless, the Australian player entertained fans thoroughly during his short stint at the Australian Open this year.   After his exit from the singles category, Nick took part in the doubles event too. He partnered with compatriot and friend, Thanasi Kokkinakis. They won their initial match against Lloyd Harris and Julian Knowle in straight sets. However, they lost their second-round match today.  Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 12, 2021 Australia’s Nick Kyrgios reacts during his third round match against Austria’s Dominic Thiem REUTERS/Jaimi JoyKyrgios mocks Novak Djokovic’s celebration at Australian Open 2021 As the players stepped out onto the court today, Nick continued his love-hate affair with Djokovic. Upon arriving on the court, Kyrgios was seen mocking Novak’s ‘cringeworthy’ celebration, which he does after he wins his match. Both players have continued their war of words during the tournament this year. Nick has termed Novak a ‘tool’ and even went as far as terming him a ‘strange cat’.  Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 8, 2021 Serbia’s Novak Djokovic celebrates winning his first round match against France’s Jeremy Chardy REUTERS/Loren ElliottDjokovic even stated that he doesn’t respect Kyrgios off the tennis court, to which the Australian star took offense. During the pandemic, Novak organized an exhibition tournament, which drew criticism due to the timing at which it was conducted. Kyrgios at that time voiced his opinion, disagreeing heavily with the Serbian superstar.  Reflecting back to the Australian Open 2021, Djokovic won his third-round match against Taylor Fritz on Friday. During the match, he tore his muscle close to his rib cage. After solidifying an initial two-set lead, the American tennis player came back into the match, taking advantage of the Serb’s condition.  However, Djokovic, being the player he is, found a way to shrug off his pain and recorded the win eventually, stepping up his game in the deciding set. He will take on Canada’s Milos Raonic in the fourth-round later today.  ALSO READ- WATCH: Nick Kyrgios Imitates Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Celebration at Australian Open 2021

“Makes Me Calm and Confident”: Serena Williams Opens Up on Sister Venus’ Support at Australian Open 2021
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Slam Queen Serena Williams has opened up about how she draws inspiration from elder sister Venus Williams’ presence in the stands when she is battling it out on the court. The elder Williams was spotted willing her younger sibling on as she fought off a determined challenge from World Number 7 Aryna Sabalenka on Sunday. Williams received support from sister Venus Williams from the stands at the Australian Open on Sunday After losing the opening set in the highly anticipated pre-quarters clash, the Belarussian stormed back into contention after breezing through the second. However, bringing all her experience to the fore, the 23-time Grand Slam champion recovered to take the final set and the match 64, 2-6, 6-4. Speaking to reporters after sealing a berth in the final eight, Serena revealed that the presence of her sister brings a calming influence to her game and gives her the belief to come out of tight corners in a contest. The 39-year-old added that Venus’ voice is, perhaps, the only ones she actually hears in play and it has the power to help through difficult phases in a match. Serena Williams says Venus Williams’ voice is one of the only ones she hears in play “I know when I hear her voice, it makes me calm and confident,” Serena said, adding, “There’s just something about it that makes me feel really good.” A year older than Serena, at 40, Venus fell to a straight-set defeat to Sara Errani in the second round after recording an impressive 7-5 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens in her opening tie. Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 14, 2021 Serena Williams of the U.S. in action during her fourth round match against Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka REUTERS/Asanka Brendon RatnayakeHowever, putting aside the disappointment of her exit in a tournament she has never won in numerous attempts, Venus put her lung power to good use from her stands as she willed her sister on during the tricky clash against Sabalenka. The elder Williams came close to lifting the title in 2017 but ran into her in-form sibling who beat her hands down to win her 7th Australian Open title and her career’s 23rd, going past Steffi Graf’s haul of 22. Serena is gunning to end her 3-year wait to add to her Grand Slam tally, which would get her level with the legendary Margaret Court’s career Grand Slam haul of 24, the highest across the men’s and women’s fields. The 39-year-old has looked unstoppable, so far, and even when she was pushed to a corner as happened during the Sabalenka clash on Sunday, she summoned her inner strength to come out on the winning side. WATCH: Serena Williams Breaks a Smile Following Incredible Rally at Australian Open 2021
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Serena Williams looks strong in the pursuit of her 24th Grand Slam title, and the American is competing with all her heart at the Australian Open 2021. Although Serena remains locked in during her matches, she finds time to break a smile at times, and here’s one such instance.  Serena Williams enjoyed a light moment after an unbelievable rally Serena Williams took on Russian challenger Anastasia Potapova in the third round at the Australian Open 2021 and got past the challenge with ease. Although the win was comfortable, Potapova forced Serena to play a tie-breaker in the first set. Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 12, 2021 Serena Williams of the U.S. in action during her third round match against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova REUTERS/Kelly DefinaPotapova then broke Serena’s serve in the first game of the second set, which motivated the 23-time Grand Slam champion to assert her dominance. She retaliated during Potapova’s first service game of the second set initiating an astounding rally.  Serena returned Potapova’s serve with force, which then urged the Russian teenager to respond in the like. Subsequently, both players began meeting the ball wonderfully and created a 20-shot rally. The prospect seemingly amused Serena.  In fact, Serena Williams was made to stretch all over the court for a single point, and stretch she did. However, the veteran saw the light side of the rally and was all smiles after getting the elusive point through an unforced error from Potapova.  Potapova had the point in her bag but threw it away by mistiming the shot. It was agony for Potapova, but jubilation for Serena as she carried the momentum to break her opponent’s serve in that game.  Serena also dropped a hint about her future at the Australian Open Serena Williams is the most revered athlete in the women’s circuit. She’s been competing for more than 2 decades, and it is no easy feat. Moreover, the 39-year-old is making her 20th appearance at the Australian Open this year, which is an incredible feat indeed.  How far can she go? That remains to be seen, but Serena Williams jokingly said that she wants to pair up with her daughter Olympia in the doubles category sometime in the future.  Tennis – A Day at the Drive Exhibition – Memorial Drive Tennis Club, Adelaide, Australia – January 29, 2021 Serena Williams of the U.S. reacts during her match against Japan’s Naomi Osaka at A Day at The Drive REUTERS/Morgan Sette“I’ve been talking to her about playing doubles here with her one day well,” Serena said after her third-round win.  Olympia is no stranger to tennis and the trophies that one can win from it. ‘Don’t Know if He Is Actually Injured’: Stefanos Tsitsipas Reacts to Novak Djokovic’s Grueling Injury
By admin | | 0 Comments |

The Australian Open 2021 has been presenting fans with a lot of exciting moments as well as scary ones. Day five saw Novak Djokovic battle through a nasty injury to get past his third-round opponent Taylor Fritz. While there’s still uncertainty about the Serbian’s fitness for the remainder of the tournament, his fellow competitors offered their views on the same.  The news about a possible retirement from Novak Djokovic spread like wildfire. He’s the clear favorite to win Australian Open 2021, and a premature exit will go down as a major disappointment.  Stefanos Tsitsipas received a question about Novak Djokovic, and the Greek player expressed his honest opinion about the match. Djokovic took a two-set lead against Fritz after which the injury stuck and forced the 33-year-old to concede a couple and make it a five-setter.  Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 12, 2021 Serbia’s Novak Djokovic receives medical attention during his third round match against Taylor Fritz of the U.S. REUTERS/Kelly Defina“I didn’t watch the match. I think it was too late,” Tsitsipas said. “Bedtime for me. I hear he played really well in the fifth. I don’t have much more information. I heard he was kind of injured. I’m not even sure. It happens to everyone. I don’t know if he is actually injured.” Daniil Medvedev made motivational remarks about Novak Djokovic Novak Djokovic is injured and there’s no hiding it. The Serbian has a match tomorrow against Milos Raonic, but he didn’t train today which was confirmed by his coach Goran Ivanisevic. Furthermore, the abdominal tear might keep him out from the rest of the tournament as well.  While all these possibilities exist, there is still a glimmer of optimism because it’s Novak Djokovic! Everybody has faith in him to endure the challenge and get back to his best, and that includes Daniil Medvedev!  “I definitely, yeah, just saw that he was in pain,” said Medvedev, who mentioned he went to sleep during the fourth set of Djokovic’s match.  Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic during his third round match against Taylor Fritz of the U.S. REUTERS/Kelly Defina“So I was surprised when I saw him winning. That’s why he has 18 Grand Slams. That’s why he’s amazing,” Medvedev praised Djokovic.  However, Daniil Medvedev has no pressure for now as he’s placed in the bottom draw. He won’t face Djokovic anytime soon, until the finals. But Medvedev isn’t happy with the fact that Djokovic is suffering an unfortunate situation at the moment and said that it’s “never good to see a player injured.” An official confirmation on Novak Djokovic’s condition is yet to be released, and his fans will have their fingers crossed. Even Tennis Australia’s chief Craig Tiley is extremely confident about Novak’s resilience to keep going, but only time will tell if Djokovic will continue his hunt for a record-extending ninth Australian Open crown.  Also Read – Naomi Osaka Reveals the ‘Role of Love’ in Tennis at Australian Open 2021
