Vaccines Are Better The Second Time Around
By admin | | 0 Comments |

In my last post, I described the “fun” I had getting my first COVID vaccine. This time I’ll talk about the second shot, which I just received just last week. Fortunately for me, this will be a much less exciting post. By the way, I should have mentioned this in my last post, but for those keeping score at home, I got the Moderna vaccine. As I mentioned, there was some HMO I had never heard of running the vaccine center for my first shot. In the email I got from them confirming my appointment, they advised me that they would automatically schedule me for the second dose when I was due. They would notify me by email when my second appointment was, and they strongly suggested that I keep that appointment, although they said there would be an option to reschedule if absolutely necessary. They didn’t give me a time frame for notifying me but I sort of assumed I would hear from them fairly soon after getting the first shot. Ha! For nearly a month, I hadn’t heard back from them, not one word. According to my vaccine card, I was due for the second vaccine on March 1, exactly four weeks after I got the first one. But February was about to end and I hadn’t heard a peep out of them. There was no obvious way to contact them as far as I could tell. I was thinking if nothing else, I would have to battle my way through the damn county website I had gotten the first appointment on and try to get scheduled that way. But I dreaded that. Fortunately, I was saved from that horror by a text I received from Kaiser, my own HMO, in late February. It said it was time for me to get my COVID vaccine, I was finally eligible! Yeah, they were now able to service youngsters like me. They lowered the age just enough to allow me to get shot. That was great, but I had concerns that the fact that I was looking for the second shot, and the fact that the vaccine had to be Moderna might be problematic. I mean, what if Kaiser was only distributing the Pfizer vaccine? They gave me a website and I had to do an “e-visit” which basically just had me answer questions about whether or not I had already gotten the first shot and which one it was. It was clear the software was properly designed to handle folks like me who had gone out-of-network for the first shot. I can’t say for sure, but it also looked like they could handle either vaccine, at least based on the questions I was asked. The program determined that I could get the second dose as soon as the week of 3/1 and gave me one of six sites I could make an appointment at, all of them reasonably close to where I live. Two of them were in the same facility I go to for 95% of my medical care, so that was cool. One of the sites was ridiculously close to me, even closer than the place I usually go. I had no idea there was a Kaiser facility that close to me. It turned out that location had the earliest open appointments, so I grabbed it, not sure where I would be going. But it was for March 3, clearly within the window of when I needed to get the second dose. Cool. The appointment clearly said “Moderna—second dose” so it seemed like I was all set. Although close to me, I was unfamiliar with the specific neighborhood of the address so the week before my appointment I drove over there to see. It was easy to get to and seemed like a relatively new Kaiser facility, but rather small. Obviously, this location didn’t off any specialty services, but all I needed was a damn shot. On the Saturday before the appointment, I finally heard from the HMO that had given me the first shot! I had an appointment scheduled for the coming Tuesday at 1:40pm (which was the time of my appointment for the first shot). I was glad in the end they had not forgotten about me but geez, how about a little notice? Just three days before the appointment they tell me? SMH. I cancelled that appointment but for backup, I rescheduled it for after I was to get the Kaiser shot. I figured that if something—anything—went wrong with the Kaiser shot, I wanted to be covered to get that second vaccine that week. I booked it for the day after my Kaiser shot, knowing I would cancel it if everything went smoothly with Kaiser. I did consider that round two at the same location as my first shot might be less of a hassle. I mean, a month later, the COVID rate had gone down considerably and there would likely be a lot fewer cars online to get tested. And there might be fewer people getting the vaccine too. News reports said that shipping delays of the vaccine due to bad weather across the country meant that the huge locations like the one I first went to had to cancel any first shot appointments. Maybe I’d go over there and see only a handful of cars backed up, and it wouldn’t be nearly as bad as last time. But no, I rescheduled so I would still have that as a safety option but I wanted to get the second shot inside, not in my car, if at all possible. On the day of the appointment, I got over there about 40 minutes early and was delighted to see that there was plenty of parking and no line to get in. As soon as I walked in, they handed me a brief form to fill out which was mostly questions that I had already answered online. When I was done, I went over to register, and some guy plugged me into the computer, confirmed I was in the right place, put some sticker on my form and sent me down the hall to get my shot. The facility might eventually be medical offices, but for the time being it was set up almost like a DMV—only efficiently run. Or maybe it looked like the college hall where I voted last year. As I marched toward the office to go to, I passed a whole bunch of people sitting in small office-type chairs. I guess there were about 30 chairs and about 20 or so people in them. But I was told to head straight for a certain office, and when entered there were four desks where nurses were giving folks injections, a bunch of chairs for folks waiting to get shot. But there was just one person ahead of me. I didn’t have to wait more than a minute to get called. The nurse had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, including on my vaccine card, and stuck the needle into me. And I was vaccinated. All those chairs and people that I had passed on my way in were the folks that had already had the shot, and they were just waiting 15 minutes to see if they had any immediate bad reactions. So I joined them for 15 minutes, felt fine, and was dismissed. I got back to my car about 10 minutes before my actual appointment time! This experience couldn’t have been more different that the first shot. What an improvement! As soon as I got home, I went online to cancel the appointment with the other HMO. Side-effects, you ask? Well I did have a pretty bad headache that evening, and also when I woke the next morning. But feeling otherwise fine, I ran some errands in the morning and then took a nap after lunch. When I woke up from the nap, I was feeling lousy, like I might have a fever. I did! It was 100.1°. I was tired but otherwise no other symptoms. The fever was gone by the time I went to bed and by the next morning I was pretty much 100%. I sure hope this is the last time I have to blog about COVID. Please.

Truthful Tuesday | Why Jasprit Bumrah shouldn’t play Tests in India at all
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Even in full-blown wars, the ace is only unveiled in special scenarios. Scenarios which can't be unlocked with anything but the X-factor, the special weapon that holds the audacity to be a differentiator, a differentiator needed when the run-of-the-mill stuff can no longer work.Jasprit Bumrah is that precious jewel, the X-factor, the special weapon, the differentiator in Indian cricket. The skills, the temperament, the confidence, he is one of the best that Indian cricket have had in ages. He's arguably the best pacer across all formats in world cricket at the moment. Short run-up yet great momentum. A chutzpah-laden jump, whiplash action from hyperextension, raw pace, dipping slower balls, killer yorker, wide-angle of attack. An ability to move the ball both ways, with accuracy and control, the deceptive change of wrist. And above all, a sharp brain, to work out a batsman's technique, play with his head, and attack where it hurts the most. He's GOLD for India. A bowler, who should be wrapped up in cotton wool and preserved. There have been great batsmen in the country, but very rarely as good fast bowlers. And that is why there is a greater need for India to be more cautious with him than others. No other bowler in the country walks into the XI across different formats, different conditions, and different countries but Bumrah. But that also means he is likely to be exposed to far more cricket than he ideally should be. And that is precisely where India will need to be careful.Given the team's fast bowling resources for Tests in India, there is a strong case to not play the 27-year-old in home conditions at all. Even his selection for the ongoing Test series against England didn't make much sense given the amount of cricket he had already played. He entered the home series having played 15 matches in IPL, three ODIs, one warm-up game, four Tests since September 19. He sent down 159.4 overs in these many Tests. He was even ruled out of the Gabba Test, which might well have been triggered as a result of his workload. In the hot conditions of Chennai, he had to bowl the most in an innings he ever had. No wonder the Indian pacer was rested for the second Test. But his selection in the squad itself was hard to comprehend, at least for me, given India have to play a lengthy white-ball series later, then there is the IPL and the much more important England tour lined-up. Not to forget, in the World Cup year, it will be great to try different combinations with Bumrah in the side so as to build up the team ahead of the megaevent than in it like the 2019 WC.Let's take a look at how Indian pacers have fared in the last five years in India with a minimum of 10 wickets: Indian pacers at home in the last 5 years  © Cricinfo Statsguru India have quality pacers in Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, and now Mohammed Siraj, all of whom are good enough with reverse swing and the old ball. And given how much of a factor India's batting and in particular spin bowling assumes, there is hardly any need of Bumrah’s presence. Why expose him when India already have enough firepower for familiar home conditions? So, they shouldn't. Also, in all honesty, Bumrah in India doesn't make as massive a difference as he does in SENA, for him to toil hard on flat, unresponsive Indian surfaces or the ones that are tailor-made for spinners. However, in SENA conditions, he is invaluable given he leads the Indian bowling attack and turns into an X-factor, with his top-notch skills which are better than most others pacers as the below stats reflect. Indian pacers in SENA in the last 10 years  © Cricinfo Statsguru Bumrah has the best bowling average for any Indian pacer in SENA nations in the last decade. He is the third leading wicket-taker after having made his debut in 2018 in South Africa, which shows he is a class apart. The difference in his bowling average with others shows the gulf between him and everyone else and his significance. And when it comes to limited-overs cricket, he is unrivaled in the Indian team with his value arguably even greater than Virat Kohli given Rohit can make up for his failures but there's no other pacer who comes even close to the diversity of the skills that Bumrah possesses. There is no better death bowler in the world than him forget India, where there is dearth of such options. And unlike Tests, India lack quality bench strength or even as many options in the colorful jersey. So, his value in white-ball cricket goes unabated just like SENA. Bumrah is a generational talent. India are lucky to have a match-winner like him. Now, it's on the selectors, team management, and captain whether they use him in the best manner possible or leave a room for injury with the amount of workload there is for an Indian cricketer, who happens to be a fast bowler, a regular across formats, and an IPL star. He certainly can't be wrapped up in a cotton wool and be preserved but used as judiciously as possible. To ensure that his body doesn't break down due to excessive cricket and he continues winning games of cricket in years to come. Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

My Confession: Male, Age 21 (AUSTRALIA)
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Let me give you some valuable background info first: I live at home with my Dad & my girlfriend (she’s between houses). They’re both my best friends. I am currently going through a chronic pain type disorder that appeared in both wrists & forearms since July 2020. In & out of appointments/checks every fortnight. I am unable to do much in my day, it hurts to do normal things in my day - so I am unable to work or study anymore. Painkillers are not helping. Thursday was the day, the day I basically lost my entire life savings. Since then, I’ve been using every single dollar I can get my hands on to recover this loss & I’m sure you know where I’m at now. $8 in debt & unemployed with no income. But how did I get here? I got caught gambling when I was 17/18, lost all my money then too but it was less than $1000 (my Dad was the only one who knew). Since then, I vowed to never gamble again & I didn’t until 2 weeks ago. My Dad & I were watching the cricket & he placed a $100 multi (he rarely gambles) & won $450. We both thought this was great so I put in $50 myself for the next game. I ended up losing $25 & won it back in the darts later on. I then decided to move on & not do any more as my girlfriend of 2 years (the one I’ll marry) did not approve of me gambling again. So I stopped - until my Dad persuaded me to lie & just gamble anyway behind her back. It was innocent losses, $5-$10 here & there for the next 2 weeks. It wasn’t until last week, the day after my girlfriend’s birthday, that everything went downhill. She had to work Wed & Thu which left me to be alone for 2 days. I was very down in the dumps & just felt like I had all this money & didn’t use it (which is the stupidest thing ever, I know). So I started gambling on the races. With high $1000 bets & spent hours & hours, got up $10k then back down to $5k before I bet my whole bank to get back where I started at $15k. I stopped, went in my room & realised what I did, I almost lost my ENTIRE bank. Did I stop there? Nope, you guessed it. Eventually, one thing led to another & now I’m $15k down & $9 in debt. I confessed everything to my girlfriend & Dad on Thursday. Which they were both very supportive. I had $2000 in my bank then & said I’d stop. But I didn’t, Iost $1500 yesterday & $500 today. So yes in $9 debt. Although I do not have an addiction (oddly enough I studied psychology for 2 years before this chronic pain stopped me), I have definitely fallen into the trap of gambling once again & I only risked losing my last $2000 to not win the money back, but rather I looked at it as an outlet to make money so I can provide my girlfriend & I with a future. But this was such a bad mindset to approach everything. $9 in debt. I am stopping here. I vow to, right here, right now. I have not told my girlfriend or Dad about the last $2000, but I think I will hang onto this one for now as I can make that back in selling some of my collectables that have been collecting profit over the years. So thank god for that at least. Additionally, I may receive a pension for my condition so if that’s approved, must lock my money away. I had to get all this out & it has put me in an awful lot of PHYSICAL pain to even write this due to my chronic pain condition. I don’t expect anyone to read this all as this is rather for me. Thank you. C. submitted by /u/codesfrost [comments]

Australian Open 2021: Serena Williams overpowers Simona Halep to advance into semifinals
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Australian Open 2021: Serena Williams overpowers Simona Halep to advance into semifinals- 10th seeded Serena Williams on Tuesday thrashed World No.2 Simona Halep to book her place in the Australian Open 2021 semifinals. The 23 times Grand Slam Champion beat the Romanian 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets that lasted an hour and 21 minutes. The 39-year-old will next face Naomi Osaka who had defeated her in US Open final 2018. Serena is only Grand Slam away with Margaret Court (24 Grand Slams). Serena was in an emphatic mood in the first set and she did not give Halep any chance and as a result, the American star won the first set 6-3. Serena hit 14 winners to win the opening set. In the second set, Halep gained a 3-1 lead, but Serena managed to come back to bring the scoreline level at 3-3. Carrying on her with her momentum, Serena made the winning charge and as a result, she ended up winning the match in straight sets. Australian Open 2021: Aslan Karatsev stuns Grigor Dimitrov to enter semifinals “I just realised I was making a lot of unforced errors and I was like ‘stay in there, keep going’ and that’s what I did,” said Serena after her victory, adding, “This is definitely the best match I’ve played in this tournament so far and I had to do that going up against the number two in the world, so that’s what I did and I’m excited. “Last year my coach Patrick had a little talk with me on how I had to do better on my defence.” She has not added to her Grand Slam tally since beating her sister Venus in the Australian Open final in 2017. Earlier in the day, Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing Australian Open after overpowering Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh on Tuesday. The three-time Grand Slam champion Osaka defeated Hsieh in two consecutive sets and sealed a comfortable victory in 66 minutes at Rod Laver Arena. The world number three smashed seven aces in her dominating victory to extend the winning streak to 19 matches.

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - AUGUST 4 : Virat Kohli of India leaves the field after being dismissed during the third day of the 1st Specsavers Test Match between England and India at Edgbaston on August 4, 2018 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by Philip Brown/Getty Images) India beat England – Virat Kohli losing streak ends as captain: Team India skipper Virat Kohli finally got back to winning ways as India thrashed England by 317 runs in the second Test in Chennai. With this win, Kohli snaps his four-match losing streak in Tests as Indian skipper and also equalled MS Dhoni’s record for most Test wins as captain on Indian soil (21). Virat Kohli’s 4 Match Losing Streak under his captaincy: It started with defeats in two consecutive test matches against the New Zealand in Feb 2020, continued with a humiliating loss against Australia in Adelaide, when under Kohli – India was shot our for their lowest ever Test score of 36 – and then the defeat at home against the England side. Kohli equals Dhoni’s record: Kohli has now become the most successful Indian captain at home alongside Dhoni. Notably, Kohli has led India to 21 Test wins at home thus equalling Dhoni’s record. If Team India manage to win one of the remaining two Test of the four-match series, then Kohli will top the chart with 22 wins. World Test Championship Race: With the victory in the second Test, India have jumped to the second spot in WTC points table. Kohli and co. now need to win minimum one of the remaining two Tests and make sure that England doesn’t win any. A 2-1 or 3-1 series win will see India qualifying for the WTC Final, but if England win the remaining two Tests then they will be playing the final at Lord’s against New Zealand, who have already qualified for the summit clash. Also, a drawn series (1-1 or 2-2) or a 2-1 series win to England will see Australia make it to the WTC final at India and England’s expense.
